THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A ZOO AND A SANCTUARY

I was roundly criticized by a friend for rescuing my 7 parrots. The crux of the argument seemed to be that unless rescue leads to rehabilitation and release, it is as reprehensible as are zoos, dolphinaria, and other animal prisons.

The position seemed ludicrous on its face. But as I respect the friend who asserted it, I thought it is appropriate to address the subject, as others may also hold his view.

I have been rescuing and nursing animals to health all my life; nestlings which fall off their nests, abandoned kittens and stray dogs. My parents did it and I walk on their tracks. We are not trapping the animals and denying their freedom - we are looking after them as they are incapable of taking care of themselves due to a myriad of reasons.

Those of us who rescue animals that should otherwise be in the wild do so for the benefit of the particular animal. We do not breed them, we do not show them, we do not profit from them - we rescue them from abuse, from neglect, or from situations where they are at risk or in danger.

Wild animals bred in captivity are usually incapable of adjusting to life in the wild, especially those who have had extensive human interaction and contact. They have no fear of predators nor humans, they have no clue to basic survival.

In the cases of my birds, for example, several are incapable of even flying. As young birds they were so severely confined that their wings could not properly develop.

I oppose captive breeding of animals any animals, especially those that are wild. To equate me and other rescuers as well as sanctuaries with slave traders like zoos and Sea World is not only wrong, it is insulting.
