EVOLUTION, EXPLAINED VERY SIMPLY

Evolution is how different living organisms have developed and diversified since life first appeared on Earth. It continues to help us understand how modern creatures adapt today & helps to explain fossil records.

Evolution DOES NOT explain the origins of the universe (this is cosmogenesis).

Evolution DOES NOT explain how life first BEGAN (this is abiogenesis…life arising from inorganic matter).

BEFORE YOU KEEP READING…you should have reached this conclusion already…whatever your belief for the start of all living things (god, gods, Zeus, pink elephants, a zap of lightning, the Big Bang, spaghetti monster, aliens, or a great turtle), this should not affect your belief in evolution.

Another definition of Evolution is any change in the heritable traits (color, behaviour, etc.) within a population across generations.

To break this down, all living things are capable of reproduction. In this process of reproduction, DNA is duplicated and passed off to the younger generation.
DNA is stored inside of our cells and lets those cells know how to grow and function.

When DNA is copied, mistakes can happen. This is referred to as a mutation. Mutations can be neutral and have no effect on the organism or they can provide differences in function & body shape of the younger generation.

Let’s pretend this happened in a mouse. Say mouse 1 & his wife have short tails like all the other great mice before them. Then mouse 1 & wife produced an offspring mouse 2 with an extra-long tail due to one of these DNA mistakes. If that mouse 2 with the extra-long tail reproduced and gave its offspring mouse 3 extra-long tails, this has caused a change in traits within a population (mice) across generations (mouse 1 to mouse 3).

There you have it, the basic skeleton outline of evolution & what everyone is referring to when they talk about evolution.
