We all know about evolution fairly well but is what we know correct?
One common misconception about evolution is that organisms are always getting "better" through evolution.
It is imperative to remember that evolution can be described as a tree, not a ladder. Evolution is not progressive - it simply results in the improved ability to survive and reproduce.
Some mechanisms of evolution (mutation, migration, and genetic drift) may cause populations to evolve in ways that are actually harmful or make them less suitable for their environments. In addition, an organisms traits may be beneficial in one situation but may not be in another should the environment change. Finally, the perspective on what is "best" makes a large difference in the interpretation of evolution. For example, a human's perspective may be cognitive ability but a snake's might be efficiency of venom delivery.
Another important note about evolution is that humans did not evolve from chimpanzees.
Humans and chimps are evolutionary cousins that share a common ancestor that was neither chimp nor human. Each has evolved its own traits since the split and neither is higher than the other. There are currently 15-20 recognized species of humans. Humans currently still face survival and reproduction challenges and thus we are still evolving.
The direction of evolution may have changed, but the fact remains that this is still occurring.
