A SHORT LETTER FROM A DISABLED TO 'NORMAL PEOPLE'

Dear normal people,

I am a disabled person. I have a wonderful, supportive family and my country fairly cares about her disabled citizens. The government have set up infrastructure exclusively for the disabled to make life more livable for us but some 'normal people' see it as no crime to take away what little convenience we have.

Normal people, you park your cars where it is clearly stated, "Parking space for the disabled." In case you can't read, (how you got your driving licence boggles me) there are large signboards having a wheelchair picture that says, that the parking space is allocated for drivers who are wheelchair bound. Yet, you don't think twice to park your car in that reserved space. There are only one or two parking space allocated to the disabled and still you don't have any qualms to make our lives more difficult than it already is. Why?

Normal people, you use toilets meant for disabled people. It is okay if you use it when there are no disabled persons around but making disabled people wait for their turn of which they should be accorded first priority while you check out your pimple inside, given the privacy, is not okay.

Normal people, you occupy seats meant for the disabled/pregnant women/old persons in buses, trains and subway trains. It is okay if there are no such persons aboard the bus or train but ignoring these people of special needs right smack in front of you, while you sit on their space, legs crossed, face, turned away is not the conduct of a civil citizen.

Normal people, maybe you do the above because in your idea, there are not many disabled people out there. WRONG. Disabled people are not out there because you, normal people usurp the facilities that are intended to make the disabled more empowered and have added quality into their lives. You are driving the disabled deeper into disability simply by using what enables them when you are able of more.

Normal people, the disabled are neither seeking sympathy nor are feeling sorry for themselves. The disabled are striving to have a dignified life with a degree of independence thrown in for good measure. Infrastructure I listed above make the disabled independent to an extent.

Normal people, by using amenities that are built for physically challenged people, you are not stealing their rights, you are stealing their independence. Disabled people loath dependence and by infringing the space built for them, you are only making them more dependent.

Normal people, will you only act conscientiously if there are laws to ascertain it? Aren't you capable to act righteously by using your conscience? Will you not give space for disabled people to exercise their independence? You have a perfectly functioning body and limbs so why do you act like you have a disability weighing you down?

Sincerely,

A disabled layman
