DON'T BUY DOGS, ADOPT THEM

Thinking of getting a dog? Then, please head to the nearest animal shelter instead of a pet shop and you will literally, save a life and that life would be eternally grateful to you.

One life saved.

Yes, adopting instead of buying saves lives - dogs found in animal shelters have only 72 hours to live, unless they are adopted into loving homes. This is because there are no sufficient space and adequate supplies to maintain a dog for a month, what more the rest of his life - dogs which are not adopted will be subjected to euthanasia, which accounts for 99% of dogs in pet shelters. (Read: Stop and think before adopting that adorable puppy or that cute kitten )
Most dogs which are euthanized in pet shelters are perfectly healthy, potty trained and would make a family very happy.

Instead of adopting puppies, adopting older dogs is recommended - that is the plea of all animal shelters but it falls on deaf ears more often than not.

There is a perception that pure bred dogs are smarter than mongrels. That perception is wrong above, below, left, right, inside and out - mutts are just as smart as pedigree dogs or smarter. Mongrels are easier to take care of than pure bred dogs and they are just as enthusiastic and loving.

Border collies and a lazy eared mutt. They look different but their eyes say that they are the same on the inside.

Do you know from where the puppy Shih Tzu that you are thinking to buy came from? She came from a puppy mill where her mother is impregnated over and over again and she would give birth to puppies over and over again in deplorable, horrid conditions.
Puppy making machines, cramped in wired cages where they eat, defecate and give birth.

The mother would be kept in cramped cages and sometimes, she tramples on her babies as there is no space to move around.. She also eats and defecates in the same place for the rest of her life.

Her babies will be taken away from her before she is able to properly wean them. This often means that the puppies do not know how to eat and may die of starvation as a result. The breeding female dogs are then impregnated again almost immediately on the next heat.

She is treated as a puppy making machine and so is continually kept pregnant, every 6 months for the rest of her confined and unsanitary life. Her nipples often develop painful mammary tumors from constantly being pregnant and breast feeding.

The toll of giving birth, receiving no veterinary care as well as having a low quality diet means that these mothers often get sick and worn out very quickly.
A mother dog, eye blinded, fur matted and legs deformed due to years of being caged up in dirty conditions and giving birth.

The total absence of exercise as well as mental stimulation or emotional connection means that these mothers often go insane and exhibit repetitive rabid behavior.

By the age of 5 to 8 years old, when these animals are of no use to the mills they will be killed. This will be the first time that they leave their prison cages; unable to walk they stumble out, having never been given a name or hugged these dogs are then shot.

Alternatively the animal may be hit in the head with a rock or similarly hard tool yet some of these animals may be sold to laboratories for scientific research and thus must endure further torture, pain, distress and loneliness.

The puppies are not treated any better - they are also confined in small wire cages where they can't even turn around.
Puppies cramped into cages, awaiting shipment.

With no human contact they develop poor socialization skills and when they eventually get to a home, they have problems adapting and thus may end up abandoned on to the street.

In order to keep costs down these puppies will not see a vet and sickly or injured pups will simply be killed or sold to research facilities.

The food fed to the puppies is the cheapest and the lowest quality and is often rotting with maggots. These young and growing pups are fed only enough to keep them alive and no more, all in the name of cost effectiveness. The food is so low in nutritional value that the puppies usually have rotting teeth and periodontal disease.

So by buying such puppies you are perpetuating a cycle of animal cruelty. If you want to get a pure bred puppy, get it from certified dog breeders or better still adopt a grown dog from a pet shelter.
Do a favor for such animals. DON'T BUY DOGS, ADOPT THEM. Don't take animals for granted because they feel pain, hunger, thirst, fear, loneliness and sadness just like you. Dogs are not rag dolls for you to keep when you want and abandon when you don't want.
